Understanding Corrective Exercise–The “Why” and “How”

Musculoskeletal disorders and imbalances affect millions of people in the United States, with as many as one in two Americans afflicted, according to the National Institutes of Health. With corrective exercise, you can help your clients target underlying muscle and movement imbalances that cause pain and discomfort. By learning proper movements and techniques aimed at mitigating and eliminating musculoskeletal imbalances, you can help clients begin, return to or continue a program of regular exercise without limitations. The key to success, however, is designing the right program for each client.

The Fundamentals of Corrective Exercise was created to give health and fitness professionals a framework to create a successful corrective exercise program. You will learn the elements of corrective exercise, how to select and adapt exercises to meet the needs of each client, and how to coach each technique effectively. With these techniques, you will help alleviate muscle and fascia restrictions, increase mobility and range of movement, build strength and promote pain-free functional movement within your clients.

Career Outlook

With the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in America, the reality is that most clients who seek health and fitness services are among those suffering from these conditions. In fact, studies have shown that 90% of people who currently use personal training services report experiencing pain related to temporary or chronic musculoskeletal issues while performing even low-level physical activities (Schroeder and Donlin 2013). Gaining the knowledge and skills to identify and correct muscle and movement imbalances is both crucial to your current practice and to your career growth. The lack of fitness professionals with the appropriate skills to serve people with muscle or joint pain and other physically-limiting musculoskeletal conditions has created a significant gap in the care continuum. Learning these skills will enable you to fill this need—and position yourself as a go-to professional in this area.

You will learn:

  • To identify exercises that can be used to improve common musculoskeletal imbalances
  • To understand what self-myofascial release techniques are and when to use them
  • How stretching exercises can be used to increase mobility and range of movement
  • When to incorporate strengthening exercises into corrective exercise programs to help clients move without discomfort
  • To apply strategies for regressing and progressing exercises, appropriate to a client’s abilities

Reviews

This was an informative course, although some of the information took a while to grasp.

I really liked the integration of reading and video. Well designed and great content.

This was a great course that showed me some things I needed to know, freshened up my memory on some things I know but don't use often enough to have on the front burner, and tested my judgement on some things that I would have had to guess at and would have guessed right. Very clear, very informative, and, perhaps most importantly, accessible. Thank you!

The course is good and short but fundamentals.

Very informative and useful!
